Here are some of the reasons we take a variety of kids toys and games to many of the workshops we run.

Change of pace

Thinking and strategising all day can be hard work, emotionally and intellectually, having a quick game or a bit of fun helps lift the mood and energy in the room.  I have done racing tangram completion competitions to get everyone out of their seats.

Encourage creativity

Facilitators regularly use visual stimulus with a group, we have used some of the amazing illustrations from games to encourage the participants to think and share their perspectives differently or use the illustrations to set their intent for the workshop

Have a bit of fun

I have a selection of novelty prizes, fluffy pens, random bits and bobs which I use to “reward” participation and encourage everyone to jump in and give things a go, it is hugely rewarding to see a 50 year old executive negotiating for the pink ice-cream eraser that his daughter will love.

Or using scented markers for a writing / drawing activity if we want to add a bit more levity to one of the less serious sessions.

Give fidgeters something to do

Just like kids, some of us struggle to sit still and think for long periods, it can help to have something to keep your hands busy. I have used play dough and pipe cleaners for this sort of activity.  We sometimes even have an objective for the day … build the best creation / monster / animal / emoji out of the toy.

To make a point

Using a game to illustrate a learning objective is an age-old trick, unpacking the observations about communication or leadership styles from a collaborative building block game or prisoners dilemma activity can help the group mature and work together.

Chill out corner

If the venue works, having a quiet corner where participants can hang out and add to a jigsaw puzzle during tea breaks, can be a nice ice breaker, give the introverts a moment to gather their energy, even do a quick crossword or Sudoku puzzle.

The list is really endless, in summary, we love to mix things up and allow some fun and creativity into our workshops.
